Brushing techniques for sensitive teeth

Ouch - a sudden sharp pain coming from cold air, a cold drink, or ice cream can really spoil the joy of eating or drinking.

Here are some tips for sensitive teeth:

  • Use a soft or extra-soft toothbrush
  • For electric toothbrushes, use a soft or super-soft brush head
  • Apply light pressure especially with electric toothbrushes. Most brushes signal when you press too hard.
  • Use a sensitive toothpaste; avoid abrasive whitening pastes
  • Sensitive mouthwashes contain fluoride and are alcohol-free
  • Do not brush your teeth right after consuming acidic food. Wait at least 30 minutes or rinse with a buffering solution (e.g., milk) before brushing, or let a chewable calcium tablet dissolve in your mouth.

A gentle brushing technique is always beneficial even for people without sensitive teeth:

  • With a manual toothbrush, use gentle circular movements over gums and teeth on the outer and inner surfaces. You can lightly scrub the chewing surfaces.
  • Electric toothbrushes perform the correct brushing motion themselves—no need to scrub along.
  • Don’t forget the spaces between your teeth.

After brushing, spit out but do not rinse. If all this doesn’t help sufficiently, we have special dental gels, both in the clinic and for home use, that seal the sensitive tooth surface.

Good to know: My personal care routine is exactly as described above. When I experience sensitivities after eating gummy bears or drinking lemon juice, for me rinsing before brushing and using desensitizing gel after brushing has the strongest effect.
