Effects of mal-occlusion on health

Good news first: not every malocclusion needs to be treated.

If teeth are “only” crooked, it can be harder to clean areas that are very tight or crowded. As a result cavities or gum inflammation can develop.

However, if the jawbone itself causes a malocclusion speaking (e.g., lisping) and breathing through the nose can be impaired.

Often the upper jaw, and therefore the nasal base, is too narrow. Upper and lower jaw then don’t interlock correctly. A deep bite or crossbite develops. This can cause a trauma on the teeth, palate, and jaw joint (temporo-mandibular joint) and leads to headaches or even muscle tension.

In summary, misalignments can trigger the following:

  • Cavities
  • Gum inflammation
  • Head and jaw pain
  • Tooth wear
  • Breathing and speech difficulties

A dental misalignment can be treated at any age using fixed braces or clear aligners. Treatment time: 6–30 months.

A jaw plus tooth misalignment is best corrected during growth in childhood. Various removable and fixed appliances are available to widen or reposition the jaw. It’s important to wear the appliances diligently.

At every check-up or school exam I check whether orthodontic treatment is necessary.
Tooth and jaw misalignments also have a major impact on appearance, such as facial profile or smile  and therefore on our self-confidence. Therefore, aesthetic concerns are a legitimate reason for braces or aligner treatment.

Fun fact: Before starting treatment, we can simulate and visualize the expected result using AI based on photos and videos of you. Impressive!
